FSC Now Only Forest Certification Recommended for Federal Procurement

August 05, 2016 @ 11:16 AM

In September 2015, the US Environmental Protection Agency issued“Recommendations of Specifications, Standards and Ecolabels” to guide federal procurement. For lumber and wood, FSC is now the only EPA recommended standard.

While the recommendation is making its way through the federal processes, it is effective immediately (starting FY 2016, which runs Oct 1, 2015 – Sept 30, 2016). Specifications to use FSC-certified products should begin appearing in RFPs for federal construction projects in the weeks and months ahead.

The EPA Greener Procurement program is designed to consider human and environmental health in its decision making. for more information visit : https://us.fsc.org/en-us/newsroom/newsletter/id/917

State of the Cleaning and Janitorial Supply Industry

March 27, 2018 @ 10:14 AM

Amazon.com & other online e-commerce stores are disturbing the Janitorial Sanitary Distribution Model which has been successful for many years, Some distributors have gone out of business entirely; some have merged with other distributorships to weather the storm; many were bought out by stronger distributors seeking more national coverage; some entered other markets and added vertical service offerings; and others became affiliated with national buying or marketing groups.

Proactive distributors are rapidly developing new business models that allow them to expand their services and further enhance their ability to provide solutions beyond products for end customers.

Whether referred to as add-on services or expanded services, the goal is the same: re-establish and restore the distributor's significance to BSCs and facility managers.

Is immigration affecting the hiring of personnel and the cost in the Janitorial Sanitary Cleaning Industry?

August 27, 2018 @ 07:03 PM

A very large percentage of all contract janitorial cleaning workers are made up of immigrants, although the ethnic composition has changed over the years. Fifty years ago, many were Portuguese, with fewer arriving from Poland and other Eastern European countries. Today, cleaning workers are primarily from Central and South America — especially Venezuela, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Brazil, and Colombia — the Caribbean — Haiti and the Dominican Republic — and Costa Rica. Supervisors also tend to be immigrants, in contrast to managers and central office personnel, who are almost always native Americans.

Hundreds of thousands now stand to lose that status under Mr. Donald Trump 2018 administration, which said on that roughly 200,000 immigrants from El Salvador would have to leave by September 2019 or face deportation.

In addition, in some states, Janitorial companies are now required to obtain a Property Services Contractor license from the Bureau of Labor and Industries and train all employees in preventing workplace sexual harassment and assault. Employers not in compliance risk fines and lawsuits.

Customers, such as building owners and managers, must ensure their janitorial companies have a valid Labor Contractor license. Otherwise, customers may also be exposed to the risk of fines, lawsuits, and liability for unpaid wages.

The above will continue to challenge the cleaning service industry and raise the cost for all type customers of Cleaning and Janitorial Services.
